“Andrew Bacevich speaks truth to power, no matter who’s in power, which may be why those of both the left and right listen to him.”—Bill...more

Sad but true - the hardest enemy to overcome is our own desire for lazy life and easy solutions. Bacevich's book makes it so clear in the American (i.e. USA) context, but surely the EU is not much different in our own way...

As long as societal inequities exist in America , the singular policy of enhancing American influence, wealth and power will be applauded by her people even if the means to this end are questionable. Against this backdrop, I'll be surprised if the author's challenge to the people to learn to live within their means will be embraced. Sure, it will make some think, but not enough to change...more

An interesting (harsh) critique of the "Bush Doctrine" and the profligate way of American consumerism. A very good summary of how the U.S. foreign policy of the past has resulted in the current mess the U.S. finds itself in.

I was introduced to this book by a friend, who described it as a 'jeremiad' with regard to modern American society. It certainly lived up to its name, with its deep and incisive commentaries about the very real dangers of public profligacy, the national security state and the ideology of American exceptionalism. Professor Bacevich is pessimistic about the possibilities for moving the needle...more

Typical liberal screed when it comes to the Bush bashing, I tuned out most of the shrillness and emotion and tried to focus on the logic but it wasn't easy. His point about the continuity and underlying consistency of US foreign policy no matter which party holds the Presidency is excellent although I disagree with his conclusions. His fearless tirade against American consumerism as a...more

Many cogent criticisms of the American approach to the world after the WWII which are probably applicable to the entirety of the West. However, Bacevich's work is incomplete in that it does not provide a coherent alternative approach.

Bacevich's capacity for clearly dilineating the cause-and-effect of the recent American presidencies since Carter is exceptional in a way that only a Historian's perspective could be. His damning of American egoism and self-indulgent culture is equally gripping, if overly harsh in a few select circumstances, but this book should still be read by everyone. In the...more

Andrew Bacevich is not anti-war. He is not a pacifist. Rather, he is a critic of the American way of war -- which is quite a different thing. And I'd say he has earned his bona fides. He was in the military for many years, has taught international government and history at Boston University for the last decade, and in 2007 lost his own son (Andrew J. Bacevich, Jr.) to that...more

The most valuable parts of this book are the first and last chapters. To me, the most important overall theme is that it is America's addiction to consumption that is at the heart of our militarism, as well as our expectation that other countries should pay the cost of that addiction...

Good stuff- an angry angry man, though. I do like someone who calls it like he sees it, thinks outside the box, and can do everything he wants in a book you can read in an afternoon.
