Rebecca Goldstein does a pretty good job in placing you in Spinoza's shoes. The Inquisition was still going on, so much so, that you expected Michael Palin to jump out at any second. You are shown how Spinoza's ideas influenced people like Leibniz, Thomas Paine and others in the "Age of Enlightenment". All of this and to become the most despised heretic at the young age of 23. A good understanding of Spinoza's philosophy, and if you happen to have read the new Einstien book by Isaacson, the two go well together to explain 'rational thought'

This was an inspiring book about an inspirational individual, whose writings are responsible for ideas such as separation of church and state.
