As far as I can tell (I am not a social studies guy) this book is a good introduction into the foundation of how materialists view the development of religion. While I do not agree with all of his reasonings, nor with their suggested universality, they are presented well Weber makes interesting points. It seems reasonable to think that many of the social and protocol aspects of religion developed similar to how Weber describes.   hide

i actually hate this book. it is a very famous book, so i gave it 3 stars. i read this book and wrote a paper on it for sociology. way too soon in my evolution for me to enjoy any of it. i am into the idea of sociology now that i am 32 a hell of a lot more than i was when i was 22. i will read this again when i am 50. it is supposed to be a brilliant book.

I'm actually re-reading this, and taking lots of notes. The Philosophy of Religion is one thing, but a Sociology of Religion, I think, explains more as to why and how geography and where people are born explains more as to why people believe what they believe, in contrast to universal and absolute truths.
