The poems in Thirst set forth a dark sorrow that seems to turn into a path to some kind of spiritual rebirth. And then, out of nowhere, there's a poem about the donkey that Christ rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, one that suggests the experience of the donkey itself, an experience that sounds at once depressing and noble. Mary Oliver excels at the "nature poem." I found her poems on faith to be powerful, as well, though at times a bit heavy handed. She's still a master poet, though.

Voltaire said that four thousand volumes of metaphysics will not teach us what the soul is. Too bad he didn't live long enough to learn that all you really need is one good poem from Mary Oliver. Called Thirst, but quenching it, this volume is the restorative you didn't even know you needed. Trust me.

so beautiful. like most of oliver's works. but this one is particularly touching because she wrote and published it a year after her wife's death.

This book goes on my short list as well. It's vocabulary is more religious sounding than her other books of poetry. I like how she comes through as a person and I appreciate the way she reclaims religious language for a non-dogmatic soul and voice.
