His Dark Materials, Book I: The Golden Compass

Some books improve with age--the age of the reader, that is. Such is certainly the case with Philip Pullman's heroic, at times heart-wrenching novel,...more

I like this series, but Lyra is so incredibly obnoxious in this book, I didn't like it. I did this book as a report last year, and so perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't forced myself to read it in one weekend (even though it wasn't due for like another two months). I have heard that this series is evil, an attempt to turn kids away from God, etc., etc. Yes, I do know about the...more

This is pretty good fiction. I've only read this book, and I'm not sure that I'm impressed enough with it to read the rest of the series. Pullman claims that he's killing God with these books. Obviously this is a premature judgment, since I haven't read the rest, but I'd say this guy has done a piss poor job of "killing God" so far. :) I sure do admire his ambition though.

I enjoyed it enough to read the second book. As usual with fantasies, I don't "get" some of the details. I like Lara though and find Lord Asriel intriguing.

Dont judge the book by the movie the book is much more expansive and complex. Its not really a kids book at all. It develops strands of religion, mysticism and the self in terms of choice, destiny. Its rich, complex and gritty. Not a potteresque book at all.Well written, a satisfying dark fable thats tense, mysterious well paced and very original. Its edgy for a proposed young readers book but it has...more

Actually read all three books straight thru. Interesting - cryptic, dark, great storyline, but sometimes this book reminded me of that guy in every college philosophy class who just will not shut up. Definitely worth the read - if you're an adult. If I were a 10 year old I'd be drowning in philosospeak!

Among other things, I found the writing, and inparticular how the characters spoke, quite vexing to read. I found while the plot was good, the writing was very poor. I disliked the fact that an 'accent' was put on the characters, making it hard sometimes to understand what they were saying, or if you could understand, it would be hard to imagine it as that way of speaking.

A good story but it's for kids.

this idea and story could have been one of the best. the charactors like pen, lyra and the golden monkey were creativly brillent. Philip Pullman though, choose His Dark Materials as a way to show children and the world his putrid distaste for god and organized religions. This book is one constant bashing of the Roman Cathlic Church. What could have been an utter classic is just a horrible display...more
