 What makes the Harry Potter series so successful? Maybe it's the fact that J.K. Rowling doesn't write children's books, she writes children's stories, more in the tradition of the Brothers Grimm than Dr. Seuss. The exploits of Harry and his friends captivate even the shortest attention spans by engaging the imagination with vivid characters and fast-moving action, instead of trying to merely catch the eye with colorful pictures or pop-up effects. Not surprisingly, the Potter tales sound wonderful read aloud, and adapt to the audiobook format extremely well. Broadway actor Jim Dale's impressive vocal range gives each character in the book its own distinctive voice--a considerable task, given the pantheon of witches, warlocks, ghosts, ghouls, dwarves, and elves that Harry encounters in his second outing. And thankfully, since the book is read unabridged, no one's favorite character is omitted. Engaging for children without being childish, the audio version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is worthy addition to the deservedly popular series. I'm sure when this book first came out many were worried that it would live up to "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone." It is rare for an author to be able to capture the magic of their first book. J.K. Rowling was able to go above and beyond that. While "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" captures the imagination of the reader, "Chamber of Secrets" stretches it to its boundaries. Creative, funny, entrancing, and intense, you discover the new friends and the old ones with comfort and excitement. It is a must read.   hide

I can't even begin to put into words the utter BRILLIANCE of the entire HARRY POTTER SERIES. Simply the best stories ever written to date and I'm sure not to find another as wrought with emotion and excitement and a truly powerful story of Love, Friends and Good triumphing over Evil in my life time -This series defines perfection!

This is much better written then the first book which I found atrociously written yet somehow contained a compelling enough story to keep me reading the series.  She must have gotten an editor.  Please don't cop out by saying that its a children's story.  See Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy for well written books for children in roughly the same age group.

Even though the plots are pretty obvious, good is obviously good, and bad is obviously bad, the characters are still quite endearing and make me want to continue reading the series.  Its a very quick read which makes that desire easy to handle.  I'll probably go on to book 3 at some point.   hide

Better than the first book, but still poorly written. The story of this one progressed much better, but the deus machina ex at the end with the sword and the hat was a terrible let down. If a bit more back story about the hat's powers had been slipped in before, it would have worked a lot better, and not been difficult to do. Anyway, as usual Rowling shows a lot of promise for story, but the actual execution of the writing is terrible. Very oriented to a younger audience, passive voice used throughout, and she's a modern, and less skilled, incarnation of Tom Swift when it comes to dialogue attribution.   hide
