Advanced sci-fi on an epic scale. Epic gets tossed around a lot these days, but it applies to this and Vinge's other works. The story spans thousands of light years where billions of lives are lost in an instant. The most innovative feature of Vinge's works is his concept of the technological singularity and he applies it to physical space in this novel. The further out from the center of the galaxy, the more complex technology can get. This has several interesting consequences that play out over the 500+ pages. A must read for sci-fi afficionados.   hide
