I really enjoyed this book from the beginning it was easy to get caught up in. To be the last of the Alvin Maker series it thought it was going to have a great ending but it fell flat. It is comparable to the Saprano's, 6 books of anticipation only to leave you with and ordinary ending.

The sixth of the Alvin Maker tales of Orson Scott Card, this one has Alvin leading a mis-matched group of castoffs, including freed and escaped slaves, unwanted French and Spanish settlers and others in a trek from New Orleans (known as New Barcelona) to the Crystal City, which he at long last starts to build, with help from his friend Abraham Lincoln. I have a problem with all the events Card refers to that don't occur in the book. Did I miss a chapter in the earlier books? When did Alvin and Peggy's first child die? When did he meet Steve Austin on the boat? I read the five books before and can't figure out how I missed reading these events.

Card started this series in '83, and still hasn't finished it? Ugh. If I'd have known that I wouldn't have even started. At this point I'm only reading them because I'm committed, and they're a pretty easy read.Problems with this (and every other book in this series): The whole frontier mysticism setting? Yeah, not my bag. I can't stand 90% of the main characters....more

A pretty good conclusion to the series but you can tell he was trying to finish the series.

The problem with this book is that the first three chapters are actually a short story in another book. Other than that, a good read.

Card, you're selling out your writing talent trying to make your completely asinine religion make sense. Sorry man, it just doesn't add up.

(Listened to via Audio Book) As usual, I was confused by some elements of this book. For instance, why is it said repeatedly that Alvin healed Tenskwatawa's eye? He never did. Actually, it's clear that he tried and failed. Also, I think I read that their first child (who died) was a male. In the previous book, Heartfire, I am certain it was a girl. Maybe I misread...more
