It's taken me a long time to get anywhere in this book... I've started on it a few times. But once past the first thirty-or-so pages I was hooked. A very weird book but very beautiful. Sometimes confusing with the protagonist's dreams and fantasies blended in so much with the main storyline that it's not entirely clear what "actually" goes on - but then it is all fiction, isn't it...

This book managed to present some essential questions. That is something not every book succeeds in. Don't ask me what those questions were. I am too confused. I wonder why David-chan chose to place this novel in Japan. I think it has more to do with distancing effect than just blind idealisation.

Another great book by David Mitchell. This one has a compelling future/now setting that for a time plays on one's sense of when the novel is actually set. The characters are all deftly drawn & vivid. It's a fresh take on the coming-of-age story. I wouldn't be surprised to see it made into a film someday.

First fifty-odd pages are among the best I have ever read. Definitely requires a good dose of the old willing suspension of disbelief, but the writer manages to pull if off in style. Halfway through, however, the story appears to lose pace and direction. The book doesn't so much come to an end as it grinds to a stand-still

While I did like Cloud Atlas better, the elaborate dream sequences are superb! You often can't tell the difference between the fictional story and the stories-within-the-story. Very meta. =)

Great book. Enjoyable beginning...allows the reader to follow a compelling character as he seeks atonement. Flew through this book!

It's a good story but I would have preferred it more agressively edited. I just I didn't need a bunch of different voices introduced around half way (all that stuff with the hen) - could have been cut for me. Felt like the author amusing himself to me.

Brilliant, exciting and evocative, especially if you've ever visited Tokyo. Mitchell has been my favourite modern author ever since first reading this.

A truly strange novel. It takes a while to get into, and to work out what's the 'real' story and what's not, but it's well worth the additional leg work. Gory, violent and haunting at times, it's a real coming of age/finding your identity adventure. I'd quite like to go to Japan now, too. One of the strangest books I've ever read. And that's saying something....more
