Ouch. Now that is a history book. :) I did not know the Peloponnesian War was this complicated. Wow. Read it if you like history.

Excellent description of classical warfare between the Greeks. Not a historical narrative per se, but it does yield clues into the why/when/where of the war while focusing on what is meant by "shield," "spear," "ship," and other weapons of ancient war.

If you are already well read on the Peloponnesian War, this will be an interesting book for you. If this is not the case, read a comprehensive history of the conflict first since Victor Davis Hanson deals with the war not chronologically, but topically which makes his evidence less convincing and the book over-all less beneficial to read. Hanson's book examines ancient warfare from the perspective of the individual soldier -- how they carried out executions back in those days (it's gruesome). How cities sieged before armies had the technology to destroy walls (it's bizarre). What it was actually like to be a Spartan soldier in combat (it's not pleasant).
