The Spooky Art: Thoughts on Writing

If you ever thought of having a go at writing then this is one of the best books you could possibly read on the subject. Mailer gives great advice and this is a must-read for anyone interested in taking up the pen (or the keyboard).

A very insightful book into the thought process of Mailer. The begining goes over his early writing and his many pieces that seemed to evolve in short time spans. Towards the end of the book Mailer delves into topics that other writers are afraid to discuss.

there are some gems in this book - great tips on writing. there is also that unmistakeable voice - all gravely and sexist and passionate - and the recurring themes; discipline and madness, being and nothingess, sex, failure and addiction. the book waffles though - there are long self-indulgent chapters that meander along and provide nothing more than an outlet for mailer's ego. if you love him,...more
