Good, smart, guilty pleasure Summer read. I think that about sums this one up in its entirety. I completely enjoyed this one, while being simultaneously embarrassed and sympathetic for the main character, Lee. Prep takes the reader along with Lee in her journey as a scholarship student in a prep school. Lee was painfully aware of her surroundings and her peers. She examined...more

This book obviously plays on the fact that a lot of 20-somethings want to re-live their teenage years, and constantly marinate on what they would have done differently, given the chance. However, despite the fact that this is obviously a book for adults, I felt like the main character could have been a little bit more likable. She annoyed me so well, that I couldn't even finish the book. Not to...more

In the process of reading. Chose it for the assumption/promise of a quick read that would engage me quick enough to read on a plane and hold my attention long enough to pick back up in the hotel room late at night. . . So far the story offers just that. No conclusive decisions yet on whether or not to recommend. . . Okay - finished it. This book made me squirm more than I ever remember...more

I have mixed feelings about this novel. Sure, this is a wonderfully written and insightful novel that includes a realistic view of private high schools and socioeconomic, racial and gender politics in general. Sittenfeld digs deep into the protagonist Lee Fiora's psyche, which strengthens this novel as a whole. However, though Fiora is relatable, Fiora could be an extremely unlikable character...more

How was your life in high school? What did the transition from being a junior to a senior feel like? Curtis Sittenfeld takes you through four years of experience of making mistakes, hiding from embarrassment and coming of age at the end of it all and finding yourself, well almost. The first day at school, making friends with the wrong people, finding best friends and then betrayal, falling in...more

This book is hampered by an unlikable cast of characters, starting with the protagonist.

Hmmm. Something about this really did not sit well with me. I'm not sure why - it's decently written, it wasn't so boring that I couldn't finish it. But there is something perhaps too cliche about her relationship with Cross Sugarman; maybe I'm being narrow minded. But I feel as if I have seen that storyline (girl falls for poular boy in high school) play out a million times, and this...more

One of the more interesting coming of age stories I've read. The unfortunate Lee has a way of reminding the reader of the insecurities of adolescence and... in my case anyway... beyond. Her honesty concerning the often selfish nature of adolescent angst is disarming. Though it's about high school, this is not really a kid's book. It is, however, a very good read.

Starts out wonderfully iconic with all the universal prep characters one meets - the clepto, the lesbian, the 4 year planner, the decadently rich intl student, a suicide attempt, a townie flirtation, so many things everyone experiences... until half way through the book, you realize you hate HATE HATE the main character and sadly most other people introduced until the end (and the end, esp w/books...more

There was really no plot in this book and it was slow moving. The main character was shallow, and seemed to only get shallower towards the end of the book. The whole thing was a huge disappointment for a best seller. There were few things I could relate to, but most of it was just too stupid. It wasn't her writing style, it was her story and lack of plot and inability to relate to the...more
