An incredible story about an incredible man, who carries the hallmarks of genius in his clinical/medical, anthropological, social engineering and global effect upon infectious disease control. Tracy Kidder has sensitively portrayed a man of huge character, and in completing his observation, has clearly showed that his life as a writer has been profoundly changed, just like the lives of all the...more

This book isn't a biography, it's more of how truely one person can have a substational impact on the world. This is about what Paul Farmer and the NFP organizations PIH (Partners in Health) has done for the world regarding international public health policy, treating infectious diseases, spokesperson for the poor, the difference of managing wealth and poverty, and the importance of appropiate...more

Very interesting book about health care in the third world, specifically Haiti, and one man's mission to make it more readily available.

The story of Dr. Paul Farmer is an amazing personal and engaging story about a man who is transformed by what he experiences. The story follows him on a journey that ultimately not only transforms him but a small town in Haiti, his profession and global healthcare practices. Please Buy it, read it and enjoy!!!

wonderful insipirational book. the wonderful thing about this book is Paul Farmer's statement that all my life I have fought for the long defeat, i.e. he was not looking for victories but being part of the loosing side. In one case he spent 20,000 $ to fly a dying patient to US, when asked whether he could have spent his money in saving 10 other patients, he asks why is 20,000 $ charged by...more

This book was a serious kick in the pants! Instead of comparing ourselves to great people saying things like, "Wow, if I could be like them, then I would be able to help make a difference," Farmer asks that we take responsiblity of our gifts and use them. I also love how Farmer only sees people and their needs, not whether they're rich, poor, black, white, purple, or whatever! His target...more

"...I have fought the long defeat... and I'm not going to stop because we keep losing... We want to be on the winning team, but at the risk of turning our backs on the losers, no, it's not worth it." This is more than a fantastic book. This book blew me away. it's hard to read without wondering, what the heck am I going to do. Dr. Paul Farmer has it figured out and if anyone has lived Matthew...more

This is one of my favorite books of all time. If you have ever read anyting by Paul Farmer, you will understand why this book is so important. Farmer is incredibly emotionally invested in his work, to the point where his anger at those who get in the way of real, useful third world development can get in the way of his well-reasond defense of his own phenomonally effective methods. Tracey Kidder...more

I have been reading this book for a very long time. Each time I pick it up I slip back into the narrative. Tracy Kidder does an excellent job of making a story of a man's life, I wish that more of us truly had story-quality lives, Paul Farmer certainly does. This book opened my eyes to a world of possibility of global vision. The lengths to which Farmer goes to fight TB, poverty,...more
