For me this is the style of book I love from Dunant - the excellent Italian-set historical fiction. The characters were interesting and loveable, while still offering some depth and a lack of perfection. Her words also create a wonderful imagery and it's easy to get immersed in the story and feel that you too are living in Rennaisance Venice. I would reccommend this to anyone who likes...more

Good book. Like in others' reviews, I don't feel there was adequate motivation behind La Draga's initial deception, nor her blindness, but I did enjoy watching the relationship unfold between Bucino and La Draga. I love the beautiful picture of Venice that Dunant painted, with its flaws and all.

It has been a while since I read a piece of historical fiction - this book reminded my of why I like the genre so much!

I didn't finish it before it was due back at the library, but that's okay because I did not care at all about the characters or what was happening in the story.

A bit racy but wonderfully-written historical perspective from an unexpected point of view. I read it in less than a week because it was so hard to put down.

So far, this has been my favourite of Sarah Dunants novels. I didn't really like the Birth of Venus very much. By the time this one came out I could see her writing has really developed. This is a rollicking good time of a read.
