more This book is lightly based on historical characters from the 1600s; they created a famous work (“The Three Wives’ Commentary”) about an opera, “The Peony Pavilion.” The title character of this novel, Peony, is a 16-year-old girl soon to be wed in an arranged marriage. Obsessed with the opera, she dedicates her life to writing about it. A third of the way through the book, a tragedy overtakes her, & Peony becomes a homeless wanderer, a hungry ghost. The remainder of the book describes her efforts to affect the lives of the people around her, those in the world of the living & those in the realm of the dead. I found the first half of the book fascinating, especially the Chinese mythology. However, during the second half, I grew weary of plodding through descriptions of Peony's endless efforts, & I just wanted the book to end.
