This is one of the first layman's explanation of global warming, so while a bit old, it was revolutionary when it came out. More important than his message about global warming, though, is McKibben's call for a reconceptualization of our relationship with nature. An excellent read!

Bill McKibben addresses environmental issues in a way that makes sense and leaves you thinking. The most amazing thing, to me, is that it was written in 1989. McKibben discusses what were hot and heavily debatable issues at the time. Looking at how things are today, it's easy to see that this man was well ahead of his time. Although 20 years old now, this book is more relevant than ever. Bill puts into words the unpleasant realities of our human impact. "nature" is in peril and we are living a defining moment in history.

Yes it is dated, but where else do they tell you it takes 14lbs of coal to make one aluminum can? Yes it is depressing, but at the time it was a highly informative book, and ahead of its time. The narrative style is easy to follow. It would be a good book to start with, provided you move on to something more current.

A bit aggressive towards the end, but an important read.

An interesting book, filled with insight and information, unfortunately, depressing and pessimistic (albeit 20 years old now) but useful, relevant non-fiction. Bill's writing style and outlook are very enjoyable... a journalistic essay that gives everyone a chance to start discussions and then wade in... with hope.
