Once again, Doctorow weaves together a rich tapestry, from the many threads of our nation's history. His prose, those long sentences, with such a great rhythm are amazing. Doctorow brings you Sherman's March from the voices of many characters impacted. The novel is compelling, haunting and tragically beautiful. Doctorow is a National Treasure.

An epic novel by one of America's great masters centering around general William Tecumseh Sherman's "March to the Sea".

I'm not a Civil War buff, and I didn't think I'd like this book when my mom loaned it to me-- but as always, I should just listen to my mom. Great characters got me interested enough to follow them as General Sherman's army marched from Georgia, through South Carolina, and into North Carolina. (I never realized the Union soldiers started on the South side and worked...more

Outstanding historical fiction set in the Civil War era. There is good insight into life along Sherman's March to the Sea, Civil War photography, and medical treatment of the wounded soldiers. Two runaway Confederates, a "white" slave named Pearl, and other characters make the book engaging throughout. I'd like to read other books by this author.

If you go back down on this list you will see two books, The Known World and Widow of the South. Both are books that take place during the Civil War (and after). Since we're going back to school and the 8th grade will be covering the war, I thought it would be a good idea to read The March. This book is about Union General Sherman's march through Georgia and the Carolinas. ...more

Superlative writing in this book about Sherman's march through the South. But only gets 3 stars due to depressing factor. Lots of amputated limbs, death, and mayhem.

Took me a little while to get used to his style. (He doesn't have any quotations "" on his keyboard. But once over that, it was a compelling look at the Civil War.

Sherman seems to get a pretty bad press for his destructive rampage through Georgia and the Carolinas. This book does manage to humanise him and his cohorts somewhat, though doesn't give much historical background to the Civil War. It is more a series of perceptive vignettes of soldiers, freed slaves and displaced civilians caught up in the chaos and misery of the unrelenting campaign. Vivid...more
