Interesting portrayal of the lives of the mem-sahibs during the Raj; the concept that their endogamous community is boring is constantly drummed into you on every page. It truly shows how ridiculous the traditions and rules of the Anglo-Indians really were.

sure it pointed out the few british women who were not the usual brand of snobbery and completely self isolated from india, but i still saw it as more sympathetic to these women than i care to consider.

Although some aspects needed some more historical detail and language definitions this book opened my eyes up to how my ancestors fared living in India as part of the ruling minority. Just how tough it was and that the world then wasn't all about Rajahs with rubies, brightly colored cloth and tiger hunts.
