A great twist on Twain's original story of Huck Finn, told from the antagonist's perspective. Readers intrigued by Pap's psyche & how he turned out so twisted will definitely find this read engaging. A warning however: it is intensely graphic & there is pedophilia and violent rape. For this reason, it is one of those that I can honestly say I am glad I read but will not ever...more

It was harsh and creepy.... chilling....parts of it literally turned my stomach, but it was an interesting interpretation of Huckleberry Finn's father...

This book was dark, disturbing, and wonderful. Clinch filled in the blanks about Huck's father, making him the protagonist using facts and clues from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain would be proud of this work.

Great Book. Jon Clinch tells this story as if he were MarK Twain speaking from the grave. It helps to read both Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn just before you read it to show how carefully this story was created and written.

An interesting, if not surreal, look at a classic, yet enigmatic, character.

This is a very well written book and very hard to read and very hard to put down. Hardness of life, the hardness of hearts, the strange ways of tenderness, the plight of women, the plight of Black people, the parentage of Huckleberry Finn, especially his Pap are the players on the stage of this book wit a hook.

Dark. Like Robert Conrad's river, a psychological journey into the shadow
