more Jacquelyn Frank's Shadowdwellers, whom she introduced in her Nightwalkers series cannot be exposed to any type of light without serious pain or death - so they live and travel in the Shadows. They also can travel into a parallel universe known as Shadowscape (and for a few -another called Dreamscape), where Trace discovers the human Ashla. Humans who are in Shadowscape are usually ghosts or wraiths whose bodies are in a coma in the "real" world.
Ashla Townsend was in a terrible car crash and finds herself in an altered New York City, though she doesn't know how this has happened. There are no people anywhere, yet the subways and trains still move - food gets restocked in the stores, and she can shop without needing to pay for anything! Yet, she's lonely, and when 2 men burst through the window of the store she's in - she's amazed that they both notice her - as they are that she's noticed them!
She ends up saving Trace's life, and he cannot believe that she can actually touch him, as the humans in Shadowscape are normally as insubstantial as ghosts! What she does bonds them in a way that's never happened before. Only Trace cannot stay in Shadowscape for long before he gets ill, so he leaves her before he gets a chance to thank her for saving his life.
I really enjoyed learning about the Shadopwdwellers and their history. Demons. Lycanthropes and Vampires are not the only inhabitants in the Nightwalkers series, though they rarely interact with the Shadowdwellers. The Shadowdwellers are recovering from a long civil war, and just when they thought that things were finally settling down under the rule of twins Malaya and Trillian, there are traitors in their midst plotting their downfall by going afterthe people in their support system!
Already looking forward to reading the next book "Rapture", where Trace's step father Magnus is featured!
