A double story paralleling the lives of two women from differentc centuries but alike in so many ways, showcased through an heirloom journal passed down and read throughout, shows how people are so alike down through time, how they have the same needs and wants, hurt eachother and cause waves of consequences for their actions and attitudes through society and generations-and gives hope to find restoration and healing. Lots of characters in this one, due to the duel plot, but not too complicated to follow. A little more tragic and graphic than some of Rivers' work, though not beyond a PG13, imho. Touching on themes of race and prejudice, ambition and self-sacrifice, various loyalties and historical concepts. I love how Rivers showcases romance in her stories not simply in it's infancy, as most people view it, but within a long-term relationship- because that is a real romance, and true to life. There is no magic happily-ever-after, the romance continues, and is often at it's best in mature relationships. The symbolism of the quilt is the clinching effect- a bit deep, but moving- ties it all together with that "Scarlet Thread" in the end.
