This book is both prophetic and pathetic: It speaks prophetically through story to a unbroken heart filled with ambition. It also addresses the sickness that is church growth in america and the rock star preachers we exalt. What is pathetic is how Americans are hell bent on consumerism and are in love with religious goods and services rather than Jesus. This book is a must read for any pastor!

Focuses on the controversial topic of the modern day temptation of a church and/or pastor to build church growth, for the sole reason to just grow or to look successful. That the church belongs to us, we own it, not God and thus ignoring the original call of a church. Heart breaking, highly insightful and meaningful! A must read for the modern day Christian! All pastors/pastors wives must read...more

I appreciate and can totally relate to how she helps us look at the trend of "seeker" churches versus teaching obiedence and sanctification. I enjoyed this book and as someone looking for a new church home it made me think about some things. It made me think of the song by Casting Crowns called, "Stained Glass Masquerade", "Are we happy plastic peopleUnder shiny plastic...more

No-one is exempted from the temptations of being lured and caught in adultery, but forgiveness and moving on in life is an option to start the healing process.

Could not put this one down. A real fast read. The only criticism I have is that I didn't want it to end.

Great realistic fiction. A must read for anyone going into ministry- pastoral ministry in particular. You won't be able to put the book down. Rivers has such a gift for creating a vivid, captivating and emotional story. In this book, you'll see how easy it is for one compromise to lead to another and then experience the resulting cycle of sin, selfishness, blame, despair and repentance.

This is an interesting read if you are interested in the pastoral realationship dynamics. Although it's a work of fiction, you can see so much of what's in the book present in many churches.
