Like Marxism and other forms of sectarian and secular philosophies, McLaren's idea of the "Kingdom of God” is based upon the fundamental presupposition of human progress. Although I believe there is an element of truth in this understanding of human history and destiny, just as I believe there is an element of truth in the cynicism and pessimism of sectarian Christian views of the Kingdom, particularly Dispensationalism, I believe that these views are ultimately incorrect when taken by themselves. Both extremes—be it the utopianism of McLaren and other progressives, or the cynicism of Ryrie and other dispensationalists—must be balanced in order to accurately convey the meaning of human history and destiny. McLaren’s failure to do this in this book is its major flaw.   hide

The message is becoming a common one (thankfully), but McLaren aptly summarizes in a minimal page count the mission of Jesus and what it means for us today.
