Deep. Sometimes painful to read because of the precise depiction of how bad racism was and is in America.

This is a collection of short stories that the author wrote. The first section deals with stories about the South and the second part deals with stories about the North (I think or it might be vice versa). Anyway, at the end there is a longer story that serves as a union of the "North and South." I didn't really enjoy this book much but I think it is partly because I only had 4 days to read...more

This was one of the most amazing books I have ever read. I can't quite put my finger on why--It's like, it's got aspects of Magical Realism, but it's completely real. It's so magnificently fragmentary, so indirect--I love it. Everyone with any interest in literature and/or the Harlem Rennaisance and/or the history of African Americans must read this book.

it is a very intersting book, in fact m doing my Masters degree thesis on it. it a master piece that cannot be classifed. in short it is a work of Art ( not entirely a novel, a play, a drama, a poem, or anything else). it is everything and nothing all at a time

This is a wonderfully experimental novel woven together out of poetry and short stories. A common thread runs throughout, and Toomer's language is beautiful, not to be missed. I strongly recommend this to those who like Faulkner or Virginia Woolf, or who are willing to take a strange, emotion-packed adventure into the mind of a race portrayed by a man. :)
