One of his several novels. Being a misfit, drinking, gambling, women. Yet it's always engrossing.

In just 150 pages Bukowski manages to offer such a strong depiction of misery, frustration and escapism from a relentlessly repeating reality that... the book is not recommended if you are on holidays!Jokes apart, a really strong, original writing that twists the knife right inside American dream's rotten side.

A good book, but still developing his own tone as an author. His wit and personality shine through better in some of his later works. Without a doubt an entertaining read, and "not Bukowski's best" is far from a poor review, but I just feel his voice is not fully developed in this novel. His characteristic short, cutting dialogue is clearly present here, but surpassed in later works. ...more

Gritty account of a filthy, embittered, dislikable old man who spends his time screwing, screwing people over, getting screwed over and thinking about screwing anything that moves. It's superb! Strangely somehow heart warming by the end of it and you turn the last page of the book with compassion and respect for the old git.

It's Bukowski - what more do you need to know? OK, this, along with Factotum, might be the most accessable of his novels (of the ones I've read so far, anyhow), since it's focused a lot on the working life. Witty, moving and confrontational - everything you expect and want from the great man.

An eye opener for me. There are other ways to live, to view life. Very interesting, very real, no fluff.
