Really enjoyed this. Quite a gripping story. Makes me want to know more about the race to discover the North Pole.

I found it a fascinating story with great characters. You will want to find out more concerning the historical race for the North Pole and the controversy that is still around.

Turn of the century explorers when there were still things to discover. Also about life in a vivacious New York at the turn of the century, about parties, social rank, money and cheaters.

Another interesting read from Johnston (I'd read "the colony of unrequited dreams" before). This novel is about the people who explored the north pole. the competition is "fierce" to say the least, and it creates a lot of drama - and a good read

Any book that can weave Newfoundland, New York City and Arctic exploration together into a seamless whole should be awarded some literary prize (it was - Canadian Author’s Award for Fiction). It's a bonus that we learn more about the rivallry between the two great explorers, Cook and Peary. Excellent.

Lots of stuff I never knew about late 19th century exploration and the race to the North Pole. There's always a risk that it'll turn silly, but somehow fails to do so.
