Having just finished all the Jesse Stone novels by Robert Parker, let me say that Stone’s world-weariness, regret and disheveled lunging about in a difficult world is nothing compared to that of Kurt Wallander. Self-doubt, pain and guilt resound, yet mix with a kind of reckless tenacity that rarely seems self-assured in any – I mean ANY - sense. This tale leapt upwards four or five times and completely caught me by surprise – and finally left me surprised all over again. Two deep in this series, I can’t wait for the next chapters.
