If you've heard the rumors that Truman Capote, not his cousin Harper Lee, wrote "To Kill a Mockingbird", then add with it the rumor that Donna Tartt could not possibly have written the brilliant and captiviating "The Secret History" and then followed it with this bargain shelf buy...

Well written, teetering on beautiful. Well developed characters, to the point that the reader can relate to them despite the time and geography between them. A study of race, class, doubt, love, religion, friendship, courage, and the power of a belief. I liked The Secret History, but I loved this book. Tartt should write more. A lot more.

150 pages of nothing but character development is even too much for me. I get it. Now could something more significant happen?

I read this before reading The Secret History, and I think it's the better of the two. I thrilled to the creepy Southern gothic vibe, and adored the sly humor. Having grown up in the 70's, Tartt's details--the Wacky Pack stickers, for example--made Harriet and Hely come alive for me. I never warmed to the narrator or really, any of the characters, in The Secret...more

Insightful, clever and a brilliantly imagined tale of a little girl's quest... well -rounded characters and evocative descriptions stay with you well after you have finished reading the last page.
