Well worth the read. I am a fan of Jane Smiley on HuffPost, so thought I would like to read a book she wrote. Not knowing what to expect I picked this up on the library. Living in Boston life on a farm is completely foreign to me, and that was what drew me in. I enjoyed the exploration of the familial themes, the love/hate between siblings and toward the parent. It really made me think about my...more

I didn't read this by choice, and I wouldn't recommend it. It wasn't terrible, but it was disturbing and very bland.

Great story. (Apparently King Lear, which I'm not familiar w/ in the original.) Beatifully written.

The writing was superb and caught my interest from page one. The Iowa scenery that she writes about reminded me of my visits as a young child with my grandmother in Eagle Grove, IA. There is some unexpected darkness that didn't sit well with me, but if you are a fan of Shakespeare's King Lear you will likely enjoy the glaring similarities.

This book was long and drawn out in places, especially throughout the first half, but stick with it because it picks up midway through with an exciting pace that kept me turning the pages... I fell completely into her story.
