Informative and fun for the non- or novice chess player. I couldn't put it down and passed it on to colleagues who are also enjoying it.

The guy is obviously hooked on the history and lore of chess. He is quick to admit that he's more of an armchair aficionado; as such, he's not a "heavyweight" thinker...but I'm still enjoying learning about where the game originated (Iraq, possibly by way of India/China). He also follows a classic match, move by move, at the beginning of each chapter, which I think was smart.

David Shenk has managed a wonderful thing here, a fairly casual history of chess interwoven with an analysis of a famous 19th century game. This book makes no pretense of scholarly rigor or analytical depth; rather it aims at sharing an admiring glimps into the world of chess for those less steeped in the game. Kudos for finding an attractive way of unfolding the history and drama of chess.

More a brief, sweeping history of chess that steps on the large moments in the game's development, but deals with little more than that. The real reason to read this book is Shenk's description and recounting of chess game between two masters known as the Immortal Game. It would have been more interesting if Shenk had done the same thing with other interesting games and problems throughout...more
