This was my first book by W. Somerset Maugham. Several years ago I saw the movie with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts and found it enjoyable. The book was an easy and fun read. Occasionally an antiquated word or British phrase required the assistance of a dictionary.  This was my first book by W. Somerset Maugham. Several years ago I saw the movie with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts and found it enjoyable. The book was an easy and fun read. Occasionally an antiquated word or British phrase required the assistance of a dictionary. I thoroughly appreciated the increased depth of characters offered when reading the book as compared to the movie. The significantly different ending between book and movie was refreshing as well (coming from movie to book, but bound to disappoint those moving in the opposite direction).   hide

I suppose it's not fair of me to read this book after watching the movie.  Nonetheless, I don't see how this book is about redemption and forgiveness.  Kitty doesn't change, and she gets everything she wants without having to try or make amends.  And Walter is so boring, you can see why she'd cheat on him with a cad.
