General, but overall interesting perspective on Mediterranean History. The Author is an expert in Byzantine history, and is somewhat lacking in Western Mediterranean knowledge, but he does try.

J.J. Norwich has made a great effort in telling us the tale of three civilizations around Middle Sea. However insufficient reference list gives rise to suspicion in readers mind.

It's neither Byzantium nor Venice, but still highly enjoyable.

Sometimes fitting history around an ocean reads a little awkwardly, however once you get past the scene setting I found this a great source of info on events that I had heard of but didn't know anything about. Such as the battle of Lepanto, the siege of Gibraltar, the Greek independence war etc.
