Ugh! I kept waiting for something to happen and it just dragged on and on. With each character delving into apparently unrelated stories about another time in their life. Nothing ever came together. It got weird and I couldn't even bother to finish the last couple chapters. If anyone completed it and can tell me that there was some reason for the whole story, I;d like to know, but I...more

Well, well, well, 3 holes in the ground. More exciting than this book! just not for me, and I thought it would be self indulgent writing, i guess, quite boring

A very political book with allusions to classic movies and movie stars.

Interesting book; it could be slow at parts and somewhat hard to follow, but it pays off in the end. The last several chapters left a very strong imprint on me. Worth reading if you like Hollywood and/or The Decameron and are a very patient reader of contemporary literature.

She may have reeled you in with the lure of sexually-explicit writing, but make no mistake - this is a considered, deeply-political novel about the current state of world affairs.

Yawn, yawn, what a bore. Slow, dull, uninspiring. I got halfway through and there was so little action that I gave up. Even the frequent sex scenes are really tedious - just get on with it!

Got 1/3 of the way through this book, skimmed the middle and then read the last chapter. I just couldn't care about any of the characters - their concerns seemed utterly inane and their conversations irritating. It was disappointing because I have enjoyed Smiley's other books.

Like Tricia, I got about 1/3 of a way through it and put it down. Lots of good desciption and dialogue, but it just didn't hold my interest. Some of Smiley's other books are much the same, while others are great, like Moo and A Thousand Acres.

A bit self-indulgent and long-winded. This book has the longest description of a penis that I have ever read -- more detail than I needed, that's for sure! And that's only page 16 -- 433 pages to go. Sigh ... That being said, if you can get into the leisurely pace and relax into the meandering conversations, Smiley's writing is enjoyable.

I clicked on "reading" it, but honestly I got through about 1/3rd of it and had to return it to the library one month late! I loved "A Thousand Acres," but like the other Jane Smiley books I've read, this one is short on plot and long on writerly description. I like the way she describes things, but I need more plot! She borrowed "King Lear" for "A Thousand Acres," so I was free to enjoy her...more
