Kirstein stood at the axis of the American Art Movement of the 20th century. His involvement with the Met, NYCB, editing various Harvard journals and his own writing, make for an engrossing read.
The biography is fascinating in that Duberman doesn't candy-coat some of Kirstein's more "difficult" periods.
