Granted, he's written some matchless short stories. But this warts-and-all biography, written with unlimited access to Cheever's journals and frank recollections of his family and associates reveals him as a total turd to his wife and children, even in his sober years (for most of his life he was an epic drunk).

I've never read anything by John Cheever so I can't figure out why I'm 450 pages into this biography and enjoying it so much. It's fascinating to read about a man's rise to literary stardom and then his collapse. I know he pulls his life together in the end although I'm not there yet. This is written so well and very entertaining.
