a pleasant surprise! I liked how the story unfolded here as well as the character development. A mystery that's not quite a mystery. There's something to be said (which I will say) about the difference between a gay novel and a novel with gay characters. The author has managed to do the latter here.

Eh. The characters Ricky and G-man are pretty good, but I never got into the added plot of an old boss out to get you. And what's with not promoting that they're gay? "lifetime friends" does not equal "gay lovers" Don't bother

Opening the pages it reads:It was the kind of October day for which residents of New Orleans endure the summers, sparkling blue-gold with just a touch of crispness, and two old friends were sitting on a low branch of an oak tree in Audubon park drinking liquor...Reading that and then the rest ,I knew it would be a wonderful journey.Poppy Z Brite knows the kind of mood that sets you for...more

Amazing beginning. Brite really draws in the reader with a well-crafted first 10 chapters, but the latter half of the book is quite anti-climactic. One seriously gets the feeling that she lost the original vision while trying to complete the book, which is a shame. The concept of the New Orleans restaurant world combined with liquor and murder was an absolute fantastic one. Don't miss...more

Liquor is a pretty engaging story. For anyone who has been to New Orleans or has always dreamed of going it gives a real insight into the true lifeblood of the city -- the restaurants. It's a story of two men struggling to survive and take their piece of New Orleans by starting their own restaurant. It's an easy read, not a lot of depth, pomp and circumstance. I enjoyed it.

Not bad. I still like all of Poppy's books (I've decided I'm on first name basis). Not quite on the level of Drawing Blood and Lost Souls but way worth the read.
