A. Lincoln: A Biography

Excellent bio. This, along with the highly acclaimed "Team of Rivals," illuminate the inner workings of a humble, self-taught man with the presence and genius to guide this country through its darkest moments. The book was well written and easy to follow. Glad I read it, and happy to recommend it.

I have lived virtually my entire life in Illinois and I even majored in history in college, but I have never read a biography of Lincoln until now. I enjoyed this book and learned a great deal. This author spends a lot of time on Lincoln's relationships with his generals. He also analyzes several of Lincoln's speeches as well. The book ends abruptly (as did Lincoln's life).

I can't compare this to any other biography on Lincoln since it's the first I've read, but as biographies go I felt it was well-written, even-handed, and a decent overview, although I couldn't help feeling there were details being left out, despite the extended length of the book. What strikes me about Lincoln after reading this is the combination of ambition tempered by a genuine care for individuals and the country, something sorely lacking from our modern-day political scene. I understand that there are some 14 thousand books having been written on Honest Abe. Wiil, one more only evidences the interest each generation has with Lincoln. This work is filled with factual details and if the reader likes such things there are 679 pages of it. It is generally an easy read but lacks the story telling skills of other popular biographers. I understand that there are some 14 thousand books having been written on Honest Abe. Wiil, one more only evidences the interest each generation has with Lincoln. This work is filled with factual details and if the reader likes such things there are 679 pages of it. It is generally an easy read but lacks the story telling skills of other popular biographers. One key contribution of this author is Lincoln's religious life or lack thereof. Mr. White's treatment of Lincoln's views and attutudes towards religion and social mories makes the book especially interesting to me. This is a good book for a slow sunny vaction on the beach.
