I read a lot of books, and I can say this is one of the best that I've read in several years. After reading Mitchell's awesome "Cloud Atlas" last month, and hearing him promote this book on NPR, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. It did not fail to deliver.

I enjoyed the writing itself, but was a bit puzzled about the story's progression and pacing. Not my favourite Mitchell book, but an interesting read nonetheless.

I really enjoyed this book. The author created the atmosphere of 18th century closed Japan very vividly.

A wonderful journey to Feudal Japan as seen through the eyes of a Dutch accountant. Seems like a dry topic, but its filled with romance and adventure. A real page turner.

A great book. Mitchell does a great job of capturing the dialect of 18th-19th century Japan, as well as his Dutch and English characters trying to make their way in that foreign outpost. Highly recommended! Best book i've read all year.

I loved Cloud Atlas, and loved this book as well. Excellent tale of a Dutch trading post in Japan, on the cusp of the 19th century. Mitchell is an exeptional writer.
