Furst specializes in writing about characters who live in Europe at the beginning, or during World War II. So there are no definitive happy endings -- they get out of a mess, but they are still stuck in a time period fraught with dangers, and terrors. Somehow, he captures the period really well. Interestingly, though I have never been to Warsaw, and probably could not find the pre-invasion city he describes, I felt as if I knew that city. I recommend ALL his novels.   hide

A great spy novel. Definitely not a James Bond story.

Quite good. Furst specializes in historical fiction spy novels, usually set in the time either just before or during WWII.
