Interesting and entertaining book. The author is Russian and it reminds me in some ways of works like War and Peace and Dr. Zhivago. Not that it is literature of that caliber, but that it tells a story of individuals and families caught up in overwhelming historical circumstances. In this case, the historical circumstances are the spiraling of the United States into techno-dominated decadence and...more

AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING! Shteyngart has an uncanny capacity to suck you into his characters where they quickly become treasured confidantes. He does this with his lead narrator, Lenny Abrahmov who, like his past ne'er-do-wells in Russian Debutantes Handbook and Absurdistan, reeks of self-loathing and self-weariness. Lenny is our modern day Ignatius J. Reilly minus the outright idealism...more

My favorite book of 2010. Crazy story about all of us in the future we are living now. Caffeinated writing, adventure, wild characters, its all good.

An eerily plausible dystopia, where everyone is constantly absorbed in their next-generation Iphones, receiving and sending extremely personal data 24/7; The U.S. Dollar is only valuable when pegged to the Chinese Yuan; the Government is involved in an expensive and losing foreign adventure in Venezuela, and on the verge of collapse. And in the midst of it all, a backward-looking, balding,...more

OMG! This book is NOT a love story at all- it is a portrayal of how close we are getting to a mad, mad state of being here in the US. Your device must be carried everywhere by law and projects your credit score, hotness rating, and other personal detail in public areas, the dollar is linked to the yuan and there is obsession around reverse bio engineering to reduce aging for HNWI (high net worth...more

Overall, a rather unusual book. It basically is alternating chapters of posts to an electronic diary by a 39-year-old unattractive Jewish man and electronic communications between a hot young Korean woman with her family and friends. The book is basically a love story set in the near future and a brutal satire of the excesses of greed and the commercialization of almost everything in our...more

One of the worst books I have ever read. Vulgar and pointless.

Super Sad True Love Story has mostly been compared to a post-9/11 dystopia in the tradition of 1984. It is brash and obscene and loud and very Russian. I like to think of it in the tradition of Bulgakov's The Master and Marguerita, a "trip" from reality to the extremities of the fantastic. Of contemporary satires I most like to compare it with Jonathan Lethem's Chronic City because so much of...more
