Every person in the Executive and Legislative branches of our government should read this. Everyone who thinks they have an informed opinion on the war and the troops should read this. Excellent read. Really stands out among the many Iraq war books out there.

One of the best summaries and analyses of the Iraq War to date - and it includes the best description of events including the Anbar Awakening.

You can't depend on the media to gain any understanding of Iraq. I still don't understand, but this book filled in a lot of blanks. Then again, this is a book about America trying to understand.

Any critic of the war must read this book to be credible in their perspective. West provides an honest assesment of the failure of the politicians and the administrators and the incredible sacrifices of the grunts and junior officers who succeeded in making meaningful relationships with everyday Iraqis to turn a failing strategy into a success one tactic at a time.
