Lisa See has done it again! This story keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. To me, since I don't have a sister, it captured the dynamics that I am sure can take place between sisters. And it's fascinating as you realize the things that unfold...this woman has an amazing way of weaving a tale and this one does not disappoint.

Two sisters born and raised in Shanghai, China. They came from an upper middle class family and lived a comfortable lifestyle. Due to their father losing everything they had and the crisis between Japan and China, the sisters fled to the United States and endured a very long journey. While there, they also faced betrayal, jealousy, rivalry, but the sisters still maintained their loyalty to...more

I found myself becoming hooked on this book. I read it every second that I had. I did find myself though constantly hoping that in the end there will be happiness. I was very disappointed to find that it ended just as sad as the beginning. I guess I shouldn't be too upset with the book. The book is suppose to be realistic and maybe you can't always have happy endings in real life.

This book was far more of a disappointment than any of Lisa See's other historical fictions. It was intriguing to learn about the treatment of chinese immagrants, especially in the Los Angeles area, and their hardships. But frankly, the book was drepressing and completely lacked an ending. It is as if the story just suddenly stops at the highest point in the climax, leaving it empty and...more

Shanghai Girls: This was disappointing. I had looked forward to it, having read “Peony in Love” recently. But this book read just like someone’s diary. There seemed to be no up or down in the tone or emotion, even during what must have been traumatic times during the escape from China in 1937/38. The book only started to get emotionally absorbing at the end, with the rise of McCarthyism;...more

Beginning in 1937 the main characters live in Shanghai. Thur the years they immigrate to the west coast facing many trials along the way. Feels current b/c of the attitudes people in US have about other immigrants now. Tragedy haunts this family as well as some joy. It seems as if the author is going to have to follow up with a sequel! At least I hope so!

Another moving story from Lisa See. Snow Flower is still my favorite. I have never openly wept while reading a book before, and the farmhouse scene (those of you who read it will know of what I am speaking) had me weeping in my airplane seat! Terrific--and sad--views into immigration and racism in the 30s and 40s. Leaves me wanting more from Lisa See!

Great read. I don't usually read fiction but I wanted something light while I was in Jordan so grabbed this one at the airport. Interesting saga of Chinese "paper brides" coming to the US during WWII, their participation in Hollywood and Los Angeles society, etc. I recommend it. We even named our new cat after the main character, Pearl.
