How fortuitous that I was given a pre-pub edition. Keep plenty of tissue nearby.

One of the most exquisite and excruciating books I have ever read. And by far the best grief memoir ever written.

A memoir of two fortyish bestfriends-writers-alcoholics-dog lovers-singletons-swimmers-rowers. There is a death (sad), a pitbull attack and lots of best friend chat, but I didn't really enjoy much of anything about this book. Both characters seemed surreal and there isn't a lot of depth to the conversations other than of the 'we are soul mates" variety

If this book does not make you cry, nothing with. Loss, death, friendship, pet dogs. If rating systems were boxes of kleenex, this one is 3 boxes.

Very touching, realistic and painful story. I want to send a copy to my BFF and to all the other sets of friends I know who have this kind of pure and rich relationship. You know the end before the story begins which at first I thought might be a disappointment. Then I realized, the story wasn't about The End or neither was that The End. There was another half of a life to be lived.

Caldwell and Carolyn Knapp (author of Drinking, A Love Story)shared their love of dogs, their struggles w/ alcohol addiction, their writers' reclusive lives until Carolyn's untimely death at age 42. Caldwell's quote about grief rings with a shockingly profound clarity to those who have known loss: "The ravages of early grief are...more
