Very interesting but the conclusion is essentially that until your achievements are conclusively validated by your own death there is a chance that you will be proven to have succeeded only by chance. Plain awful. The book has a couple of conventional ideas presented in somewhat original manner. All those are drowned in an unbelievable stream of arrogance and irrelevant babble. Whole passages have nothing to do with the theme of the book, and are there to give another example of how stupid everyone (except for NNT) is. The references hard science topics range from OK to misleading to...more

A tad meandering for my taste, but still contains useful and important lessons. Some parts (such as the section on Karl Popper) were excellent - others could've used more development.

Excellent book about how much of life is simply unknowable and governed by chance. Even though Taleb is a quant trader, his philosophy applies to everything. Everyone should read this book.

The role of luck in one's success is highly underrated. We like to think that we are where we are because we beat the odds by hard work and hard work only. Taleb explains why it isn't so. He talks about our biases and how we are not hard-wired to have an intuitive grasp on probability and chance. Not sure I'm a Taleb fan, interesting stories and anecdotes but not convinced that his peer group is at all the same as the rest of us. He admits at the start of the book that he is writing based on personal knowledge,yet often his POV is based on opinion rather than references or discussion.
