Some will find it relentlessly dark, but the characters are driven by a kind of blind hope that I remember from my teens, when I kept pulling myself out of relatively hopeless situations to get closer to feeling alive.
On a second reading, I'm struck by the idea that the characters have so few redeeming features, yet I care for them. This is a testament to Moore's uniquely sympathetic interpretation of people who consistently make poor choices.
