Though it contained the insight to human nature, as all the Adam Dalgliesh mysteries do, it lacked in Adam Dalgliesh. Still a great read overall but I like the books that include Adam, Kate and the rest of the Scotland Yard team.

The basic story was good, but I felt that it was too cluttered by sub plots and minor charachters. I understand that the author was exploring the inner workings of humans and their actions but she went too far, I think. I was intrigued by Adam and liked Rikrads and Meg, but didn't really get to know them or the myriad of other people in the story. The crimes also seemed pushed to the background,...more

I understand that the author was exploring the inner workings of humans and their actions but she went too far, I think. I was intrigued by Adam and liked Rikrads and Meg, but didn't really get to know them or the myriad of other people in the story. The crimes also seemed pushed to the background, which is unnusal for this genre. I was intriuged enough by Adam to possibly want to read another book by P.D. James, but the style was cumbersome so it's not on the top or even middle of my list.   hide

One of my favorites in the Adam Dalgliesh series. James has always elegantly blended suspense and and rich characters in her crime novels. This novel in particular features characters who must face the consequences of their actions, and the impact one murderous act can have on a small community. I was reading this book back stage at GLT during the run of Passion of Dracula, the play Warren and I met on. Trying to read quickly because PBS also had the show on at the same time and I didn't want to get behind.

It is really very well written, though not fast, it is very literary, very educative, very descriptive, well portrayed characters, nature-lover description of everything found on scene.  You would find it slow if you have read fast thrillers.

On the whole there is a whole lot of screen play, but worth it, the suspense is not divulged until the end.
