I cannot recommend this book enough, it is a joy to read, thoroughly engrossing, for students of history and the casual reader alike. Stalin was a fascinating character, by turns mercurial and monstrous and Montefiores exhaustive research and panoply of fresh revelation truly establishes fresh contexts for pivotal events in the previous century. At times harrowing and occasionally daunting,...more

If you can get past Montefiore's overembellished language, this is a great book. There are some really funny hijinks: Stalin taking a crap in the middle of the road in front of his aids, writing in crayon Kill them all! on execution orders, all night drinking contests, and Stalin barricading himself in his room for days when Hitler attacks.

A rare chance to look into the mind of one of the most influential people in this century, whether you think he is a hero or a monster this book will be an intriguing and worth-while read. Contains unfathomable amounts of research organized into a structured story, and many quotes and little-known-facts from and about Stalin and those close to him, as the book traces his involvement in the...more

This book gives a chilling account of Joseph Stalin. It shows him in his day to day life to be likeable, even amiable. It shows him as a loving, albeit negligent father. Meanwhile throughout Russia, millions are slaughtered on his command. Absolutely brilliant. Montefiore has captured the humanity of Stalin within this book.

Probably the best, most honest look at Stalin ever written. It strips away some of the tired old assumptions about him and provides an energized new look with new, relevant research.

This book utilized the wealth of archival references that were simply not available before 1991 to Western scholars. It's an easy and quick read that touches on Stalin's life and those around him without getting bogged-down in opinion and revisionism. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in the Stalinist period in Soviet history.

Good story about collective madness. Tells how a divine target makes people to believe everything is justified in order to reach the goal, even a systematic killing of millions of your own countrymen.
