Thus far, a constant intriguing chronicle of phsycological and sociological perspective of what was often considered female (quote-unquote) diseases ... like PMS etc. ..... quite funny yet perceptive ... look forward to finishing it.

This book is an eye-opening look at women in American society over the past 200 years or so.  I'd recommend it for everyone--male or female.  After all, in the words of the authors, "The Woman Question, in the end, is not only the question of women but the broader question of how we--women and men together--will manage our civilization."

One of the authors, Barbara Ehrenreich, signed my copy of this book after she spoke on campus at UTA.  I am so excited to have a signed copy of one of her books!  She is an intelligent, insightful woman, and For Her Own Good is one of the best, most thought-provoking books I've read in a long time.   hide

just started reading this a couple days ago.  as a woman with a chronic illness and severe chronic pain, i thought this book would be really fascinating (it is!!!!), not just because of my feminism and my health situation either.  check it out, this is a fantastic book!!!

read it in small doses. there's a lot to digest. the prose style can get a little academic at times, but the cultural phenomena that ehrenreich and english describe are fascinating.

This book gave a lot of historical background about medicine and psychology as it pertains to women in the past two centuries.  I found this information quite fascinating.  I was fairly disappointed at the brash assumptions made in the later chapters regarding Christians and stay at home wives/moms.  I don't think it's quite fair to label feminism as strictly for liberal minded people or to pit...more

I was fairly disappointed at the brash assumptions made in the later chapters regarding Christians and stay at home wives/moms.  I don't think it's quite fair to label feminism as strictly for liberal minded people or to pit the idea of equal gender rights against Christianity.  I also found it offensive that women who choose to stay at home, or men who are successful and have stay at home wives are pushing us backwards.  I thought feminism was all about allowing us that choice, whichever that choice may be.   hide
