A wildly entertaining and funny history and travelogue of Paraguay. Gimlette is one of the great travel writers. Also check out his Nova Scotia book, the Theater of Fish.

Wish I had read this book before visiting Paraguay and not after. Don't think I'll be back - pity!

Isolation breeds and attracts eccentricity, seems to be the theme. For example, I did not know that there were Mennonites in Paraguay (these would be the, ahem, good German immigrants). The War of the Triple Alliance certainly ranks up there with the world's great collective displays of insanity. Gimlette's style is a bit ADD and self-consciously quirky for me, though.

Great book linking together travel through Paraguay and its intriguing history. Probably the only book with this focus so far, a definite must if you're remotely interested in one of the most isolated, most South American countries on the continent.

It is a little bit Nazi-focused, which is...more
