I found this a terribly difficult book to get through. Kertesz's reputation as a rather obscure writer-philosopher is well-deserved. Parts of this were impenetrable for me, however there were stories/episodes which were uplifting and beautiful; for example, the recollection of the boy in the concentration camp who offers to bring Kertesz his share of rations, is life-affirming. What a difficult book to process. It was hard to wrap my mind around it, but I did take away quite a bit from it. It really made me wonder about a lot of things regarding life...it's definitely a book that takes more than one read to understand, at least for me.
